Alan R. Sparrowhawk, 92, of Independence Kansas passed Wednesday night, May 3rd, 2017. He was born the morning of September 17, 1924 to Norman and Lorena Sparrowhawk in Wakefield Kansas. Alan graduated from Wakefield High School even though he occasionally sneaked out to take flying lessons. Before leaving home for his Air Force duties, on January 2, 1944 he married Lucile Clark before anyone else could snag her. Eventually three children appeared whom we know today as Julie Robinson, Kathy Raub, and Bryan Sparrowhawk. As the family and his quintessential aviation career progressed it led his family from place to place after he and Lucile left Wakefield included South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, back to Independence Kansas, Colorado, Alaska, Texas. In retirement Alan and Lucile moved again to Colorado. From that base they spent eight years travelling around the United States. In March of 2012 their daughter Kathy lured them back to another of their favorite places, Independence Kansas, wherein they renewed their membership in the First United Methodist Church.
Alan's aviation passion began in Wakefield and then in earnest with the Air Force and more training in the Spartan School of Aviation in Tulsa Oklahoma. The city of Yankton, South Dakota was delighted to have him and a couple of his buddies set up an aviation service at their municipal airport wherein they provided aircraft maintenance, pilot training, crop spraying and charter services. Fatigued from overwork he accepted a positon with Sinclair Oil Corporation, initiating the nomadic portion of his career.
Surviving Alan are his daughter Kathy of Independence Kansas, son Bryan of Monroe Washington, four grandchildren, Dax Raub with wife Helena, Tina Raub and companion Laurence, Sean Pfuehler and wife Kerri, and Jodi Pfuehler, eight great-grandchildren, Brittney Barger, Samantha Barger, Kaden Pfuehler, Nicholas Curley, Alexandra Pfuehler, Zachary Pfuehler, Zoe Raub, and Axl Raub.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Stanley and sister Lorraine, daughter Julie, great granddaughter Ryan Faith Pfuehler, and most recently his wife Lucile in May 2016.
