Bobbie Metzger

Bobbie Gene (Bob) Metzger, 83, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at his home in Independence, KS. Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice and may be left with the chapel.
Bob was born on March 25, 1933 in Greenwich, KS to Eugene (Gene) and Hazel Metzger. He graduated from Augusta High School in 1951. After graduation, he moved to LaFontaine, KS where he farmed for the majority of his life. In addition to farming, Bob worked briefly at the Independence, KS cement plant. In 1955, Bob married Jolene Mersereau, and they had three children; they divorced in 1992. In his younger days, Bob enjoyed roller skating and water skiing with friends and family. On November 19, 1994 Bob married Deloris Moore in Independence, Kansas the couple lived on a farm in Lafontaine, Kansas for 11 years. In 1999 the couple bought an R.V. and traveled from the East Coast to the West Coast and from North to South until Bob's failing health forced them to quit traveling and they moved to Independence, Kansas. Because of his condition, Deloris Metzger became his full-time caretaker. When the couple needed extra help, Bobbie Mahlun was hired part-time and became very fond of Bob.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Hazel Metzger of LaFontaine, KS and his sister Phyllis (Metzger) Thornbrough of Coffeyville, KS; one Step-son, two step-grandchildren, and two step-great- grandchildren. Bob is survived by his wife Deloris Metzger, of the home, three children, Rocky Metzger of Neodesha, KS; Roxanna (Monty) Friebel of Mansfield, OH; and Gina Morris of Wichita, KS; three step-children, Chris Moore, Marlyn Hills, Dianna Wolf, all of Independence, KS; six grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and nine step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is Matt Schultz, who is like a son to Bob and his right hand.
