Bobbie Van Pelt

Bobbie Clyde Van Pelt, 86 of Independence, Kansas passed away at Labette Health in Parsons, Kansas on Saturday, December 19, 2020.

Bob was born on June 12, 1934 in Smyre, North Carolina to Ervin Lee and Annie Bell (Gibson) Van Pelt. Bob entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged after proudly serving his country. On November 2, 1957 he married Barbara Jo Overson in Tacoma, Washington. In 1962 Bob joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and they quickly developed into his second family. Bob worked as a welder traveling the United States welding at power plants. In 2002, Bob and Barbara moved to Independence and made their home. Bob loved his animals, he loved to hunt, fish, and tend to his vegetables and grapes in his garden. Bob also liked to create metal sculptures for his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ervin Lee and Annie Bell Van Pelt, wife Barbara Van Pelt, brothers, Max and Dean Van Pelt and sister, Pat Van Pelt.

Bob is survived by his children, Michael and wife Rene’ Van Pelt, Robert and wife Marka Van Pelt, Tracy and husband Brad Oakes, Jeri and husband Christopher Hammerschmidt, Kelli and husband John Medlin, and Ceairra Van Pelt, 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. The family will greet friends at Webb and Rodrick Chapel on Monday, December 21st from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Tuesday, December 22nd at 1:00 pm with interment immediately following at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence. The family has requested in lieu of flowers a memorial contribution be made in Bob’s name to the Labette Health Foundation or AWOL of Independence.
