Chester Duane Bechtle, age 82, of Independence, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Medicalodges of Independence, Kansas. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory with burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas with Military Honors provided by the United States Army. The family will greet visitors on Sunday, November 4, 2018 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to The Independence Church of God and may be left with the chapel.
Duane was born December 2, 1935 in Ottawa, Kansas to Chester Nathan and Gertrude Alvena (Wendorff) Bechtle. On August 5th, 1956 he married Betty Ann Cannady in Ottawa, Kansas.
Duane served in the United States Army from 1957-1963. Duane and his wife Betty were foster parents for over 40 children over the years. Duane is a Christian and a member of Independence Church of God
Duane graduated from Ottawa University and then Pittsburg State University with a master's in music
Mr. Bechtle served as a music Director for Pleasanton, Kansas High School. Then at Independence, Kansas High School from 1963 until he retired in 1996. Duane was an avid Jayhawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan. He enjoyed watching sports and was a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Duane was preceded in death by his Parents, wife, and one sister Harriett Bechtle. Those left to treasure his memory include six children, Cindy ( Tony) Nix, Wichita, Kansas, Greg ( Ruth) Bechtle, Michelle ( Tony) Melton, and Cathy Bechtle, all of Independence, Kansas, Jeff Bechtle, Chanute, Kansas Shelly ( Mark) Wilson, Cherryvale, Kansas 17 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, one brother David ( Audrey) Bechtle, Lone Jack, Missouri, one brother in law Richard ( Mary) Cannady, Glenrock Wyoming.
