Donald Everett Smith, born October 22, 1934, passed away Saturday, December 19, 2020, with family by his side. Don was married to Peggy Carlene (Moore) Smith for nearly 52 years before her death in March 2007. Together, Don and Peggy had four children: Richard Allen, Donald Eugene (Gina), Rebecca Ann (Charlie) Austin, and Robin Jay.
Don was an avid KU basketball fan, but his biggest joy was being surrounded by family. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren: Lindy (Jeremy) Merritt, Lacey Smith (Mark Curran), Alexandra Rice (John Burghart), Tyler (Lindsay) Smith, Jaime Smith, Adrianna Smith, Madyson Smith, and Gabriella Smith; and great grandchildren Asher and Oliver Merritt, Savannah Mae Curran, and Jackson Smith.
Don worked for Layton Oil Company (Equinox) for 40 years and was an active member of the community. He was involved in youth sports as a coach, umpire, and referee in Southeast Kansas, and he was a member of Community Christian Church in Independence.
Don didn’t know a stranger and was well-liked by all who knew him. He will be remembered as a man full of life and an ornery sense of humor. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside celebration of Don’s life at 2 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2020, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.
