Dorothy Merritt

Dorothy Jean Merritt, age 95, of Independence, KS passed away on Sunday April 19, 2015 at Meadicalodges of Independence. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., at Webb & Rodrick Chapel & Crematory with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, KS. Friends may register from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at the chapel with the family receiving guest's from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the family suggests memorials to Mercy Hospice or Elk City United Methodist Church.
Dorothy was born June 5, 1919 in Elk City, KS to Daniel and Atha (Bray) McTaggart she was raised and attended school in Elk City. She married Clifford H. Merritt on January 13, 1936 in Columbus, KS. To this union the couple was blessed with four children. Dorothy was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, and Kansas City Royals Baseball with her husband. Dorothy decided to join the work force and found employment with Food Town as a checker in 1965 and worked there for 20 years until her retirement. After retirement Dorothy decided to provide childcare and did so for a number of years until her and Clifford decided they wanted to travel. They traveled every chance they had until their health prevented it. Dorothy was an active 30 year member of the Elk City United Methodist Church and a 47 year member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include 3 daughter's; Marilyn Jean (John) Wilson of Vilonia, AR; Jan G. Stevenson of Coffeyville, KS; Sue A. (Jim) Feruson of Sullivan, MO; 1 son; Clifford "Lynn" Merritt of Independence, KS; ten grandchildren, Mike Davis of Sullivan, MO; John Bruce of Elk City, KS; Richard Bruce of Eureka, KS; Phil Stevenson of Lawrence, KS; Jeff Stevenson of Owatonna, MN; Jeremy Merritt of Winfield, KS; Kathy Ruwwe of Sullivan, MO; Becky Spicer of Andover, KS; Alyssa Merritt of Tulsa, OK; Ally Merritt of Independence, KS; and 14 great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 73 years Clifford Merritt, 3 sisters; Irene Lair, Margaret Denton, and Audrey Smith, 5 brothers, James McTaggart, Raymond McTaggart, 3 infant, and one grandson Robert Merritt.
