Eric Hjalmer Sundquist, aged 90, went to his reward on January 21, 2018 in Bernalillo, NM. Eric was a resident of Independence most of his life, moving here in 1963. He lived here until moving to be close to his daughters on October 13, 2017 in New Mexico.
Eric was born on May 11, 1927 in Manitoba, Canada to John and Amelia Sundquist and had one brother, Ivan, all of whom preceded him in death. Eric grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan before meeting and marrying his wife of 58 years, Alice (Heisler) Sundquist of Oklahoma. Together, they had four children, Linda (Robert) Stewart of Albuquerque, NM, Barbara (Jeff) Hose of Sapulpa, OK, Sandra (Gregory) Beauman of Albuquerque, NM and Wayne Sundquist of Independence. Eric moved to the United States in 1960 with his family that then consisted of Alice and three daughters. They lived for a short time on a farm outside Humboldt, KS before moving to Independence where Eric soon started his own plumbing business, Eric's Plumbing. After retirement in 1992, Eric and Alice traveled and enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren. Eric also volunteered at AWOL, the animal shelter in Independence. Eric could be seen around his neighborhood up until he moved, walking or on his bicycle and later, tricycle, often with his dogs.
Eric was preceded in death by his wife, Alice.
His children and 6 grandchildren, Andrea (Nathan) Huffstetler (Sapulpa, OK), Megan (Aaron) Zaitschik (Edmond, OK), Amanda and Zachary Sundquist (Bartlesville, OK), Cody and Josie Sundquist (Independence, KS) as well as four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many, many friends remember him fondly and will miss him.
Services for Eric will be held Friday, February 16 at 10 a.m. at Webb & Rodrick Chapel in Independence, KS. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to AWOL and may be left with the chapel.
