Esther Sue Pittenger Shenk, age 92, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Windsor Nursing Home, Coffeyville, Kansas. She was born September 11, 1926, in Cherryvale, Kansas, to Herman C. and Frances C. "Rotterman" Pittenger.
In 1928 the family moved to the Coffeyville area. Sue attended Montgomery County Rural Schools of Bates, West Brown and Cedar Bluffs. She graduated from Field Kinley High School in Coffeyville in 1944 and then attended Coffeyville Junior College.
Some of Sue's employment included J. J. Newberry's, Fred Kistler Oil Co. and Page Milk Company in Coffeyville where she was a secretary for Jim Page. On October 12, 1951, she married Lloyd Nolan Shenk of Wichita. In 1952 they purchased the Oldsmobile-Cadillac Agency in Independence, Kansas, where Sue worked as the bookkeeper for several years.
In 1961 Sue was employed at the Citizen's National Bank in Independence. She retired from the bank as Vice President, Cashier and Trust Officer in 1982. She had been a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served as an officer of Southeast Kansas Chapter of Bank America for two years.
Sue was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence.
Survivors include two sons, William (Bill) Shenk of Independence, Steven (Steve) and wife, Vickie Shenk of The Woodlands, Texas; two grandchildren, Jay and wife, Sarah Chaney of Midland, Texas, and Kimberley and husband, Scott Bollinger of Plano, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Jahred Chaney, Kailah Chaney, Sebastian Bollinger, and Addie Chaney; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death were her parents, husband, two brothers, and five sisters.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory, 306 W. Main, Independence, Kansas.
