George W. Puryear, 94, Independence, Kansas passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville, Kansas. Private family services have taken place.
George was born September 9, 1922 in Doniphan, Missouri to Clyde V. and Frona E. (Hayden) Puryear. George attended Doniphan schools, served in The United States Navy Hospital Corp during WWII, and later attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Agricultural Education. George taught High School in Popular Bluff, Qulin, and California, Missouri. George was united in marriage to Clarice Sutherland on February 9, 1951 in Doniphan, Missouri. In 1955 George and Clarice moved to Independence, Kansas where they owned and operated, George's Shoe Store, located at 114 N. Penn and later, Shoe Land, located at 317 N. Penn until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement George worked part time at Hasselmanns Flower Shop. George was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and served as a member on the Board of Directors for many years. He also served as a Sunday School Teacher.
George was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Clarice. Survivors include three sons: Rick and wife, Debbie Puryear, of Joplin, Missouri, Don and wife, Shelly Puryear, of Overland Park, Kansas, and Lanny and wife ,Cheryl Puryear, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, George Robert Anthony and wife, Julie Puryear, Sierra Dawn Puryear, Ethan Puryear and Hannah Puryear; and four great grandchildren.
