George F. Will, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2025, due to heart failure.
Born on June 20, 1934, in Enid, OK, George was the beloved youngest child of the late Florence and Albert Will. He was preceded in death by his four siblings.
George proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, retiring as a Lieutenant and was honored to be selected as captain of the VP-2 pistol team and a permanent member. Following his military service, he dedicated another 20 years to Syscon, a government contractor, before retiring. His life journey took him across the country, with 30 years spent in Southeast Louisiana, 10 years in Lemoore, CA, and various Navy stations before settling in Independence, KS.
George was deeply involved in his community as a dedicated Mason and Shriner and, for a time, an Elk. He led the Wreaths Across America initiative for veterans for nearly ten years and served as Master of the Masonic Lodge in Amite, LA. His dedication to veterans extended to organizing numerous breakfasts and gatherings in their honor. He was also a committed member of the First United Methodist Church.
George's passions were diverse and hands-on. He took great pride in being selected for the Honor Flight program, celebrating veterans with a memorable trip to Washington, D.C. He enjoyed traveling and spent four years of full-time RV travel across the United States before settling in Hammond, LA. He was also a Master Gardener, skilled woodcarver, scroll saw artist, square dancer, fisherman, and coffee roaster—always finding joy in working with his hands and helping others. He was known for his keen advice, one of the best was to never pass up the opportunity for ice cream!
George is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Shirley Will; his seven children: George & Kelli Will (Santa Ana, CA), Bonnie & Kirk Des Jardins (Denver, CO), Peggy Williams (Oklahoma City, OK), Steve & Diana Foley (Pace, FL), Bob & Lori Foley (Independence, KS), Kristi & Paul Rocha (Pleasanton, CA), and Pam & Terry Darner (Independence, KS); 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In honoring his wishes, George will be cremated, and his remains will be buried with full military honors. His family will have a celebration of life in Pensacola, FL later this spring.
George's legacy of service, craftsmanship, and love will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him
