Harold E. Brickens, age 88 of Independence, passed away at his home on March 29, 2015 surrounded by his family, holding the hand of his wife.
Harold was born on July 18, 1926 in Carrollton, Missouri to James and Ella (Peterson) Brickens. Harold and his 2 sisters were raised in Iola where he attended and graduated from high school. After graduation Harold joined the United States Army, before being sent overseas he asked his high school-sweetheart Lila "Jerry" Stroup to be his wife. The couple was joined in matrimony on March 14, 1945 in Mexico, Missouri, to this union the couple was blessed with 3 children. After proudly serving his country during World War II Harold found employment with Sinclair/Arco. Traveling with work they moved to Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, and back to Independence, Kansas where he retired after 38 years of devoted service. In his spare time Harold loved to play golf and bowl, he was a member of the Independence Country Club, the VFW Post 1186, Arco Retires, and a member of the First Christian Church. Harold and Jerry were avid fans of KU basketball. Harold's greatest accomplishments in life were his marriage of 70 years, his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren; he loved being a husband, father, and grandfather. Left to honor Harold's memory is his wife Lila "Jerry" of the home, son; James Brickens, daughters; Susan (John) Smart, Patty Graham, sister; Mary Brill, 3 grandchildren; Craig (Cari) Graham, Dr. Harold (Carissa) Smart, and Robert (Terisa) Smart, and 8 great-grandchildren. Harold was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Helen Morris.
Honoring Harold's wishes cremation will take place and a memorial graveside service will be held on April 7, 2015 at 1:00pm at Mount Hope Cemetery with Evangelist David Bycroft presiding over the service. Friends may sign the register book on April 6, 2015 from 8am to 7pm with family receiving guests from 6pm to 7pm at Webb & Rodrick Chapel & Crematory. The family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society and they may be left with the Chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to Webb & Rodrick Chapel & Crematory.
