Joan Shepherd

Velda Joan Shepherd, 91, Independence, Kansas passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Eagle Estates in Independence, Kansas. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. Memorials may be made to Harry Hynes Hospice and left with the Chapel.

Joan was born to Lloyd and Viola (Fegel) Myers in Chanute, Kansas on February 10, 1932. She attended and graduated from Chanute, KS schools. Joan married William (Bill) Shepherd on June 3, 1950, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The couple made their home in Independence, Kansas, and owned and operated several businesses including a skating rink, a paint store, and finally Shepherd’s Truck and Tractor.

Joan spent her life working side by side with her husband Bill in their business. The couple liked to travel, fish, and spend time at the lake house. Joan was an avid KU basketball fan and rarely missed a game. She was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Independence and was a volunteer with Mercy Hospital Auxiliary for many years.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Larry Shepherd, and one sister, Nelva (Jean) Frederick. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Bill of 73 years, of the home; two sons: Randy ( Sherri) Shepherd, Independence, KS; Brian (Judy) Shepherd, Independence, KS; five grandchildren: Kevin ( Jordan) Shepherd, Independence, KS; Scott ( Abby) Shepherd, Overland Park, KS; Dustin Shepherd and partner Veronica Soria, Cascade, IA; Lauren Shepherd and fiancé James Reynolds, Leicester, NC; Andy ( Ariana) Shepherd, Independence, KS.; and seven great-grandchildren: Reace, Jaxon, and Kinley Shepherd, Hudson and Liam Shepherd and Savannah and Hunter Shepherd
