Joseph Warnock

Joseph Louis Warnock born in Mineola, New York, May 9, 1949 to Mary Louise Garbarini and Louis W. Warnock died at his home in Independence November 1, 2020

He received his B.S. in Art Ed from S.U.N.Y. New Paltz and later a M.S. in education from P.S.U.  He served in the A.S.A. Army Security Agency from 1968 until 1972. He taught third grade at Lincoln Memorial Elementary in Caney, KS from 1976 to 2003. While at Lincoln he served on the yearbook staff, was star lab coordinator, wrote Lookin’ at Lincoln for the Caney Chronicle, was selected seven times for Who’s Who among America’s Teachers. He is best remembered for the third grade Rockety program. Joe was a pilot who built and flew his own planes. He was a founding member of Mid-America EAA Chapter 980, a life member of the experimental Aircraft Association, a member of Airplane Owner and Pilot Association and a member of Caterpillar Club. He was a life member of the VFW, a member of the National Association of Rockety, a founding member of the Kansas Organization for Space Modeling, The North Central Region Aerospace Education Association, the Kansas Cosmosphere, and Space Center, Friends of the Independence Library, FORPAZ, life member of N.E.A., the Coffeyville Area Retired School Personnel, and the First United Methodist Church. He was a Mercy Hospital Auxiliary member from 2006-2015 and worked as a volunteer at the American Red Cross Blood drives donating 92 units. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was an author having written and published 12 books. He was also a member of St. John’s Health for Life for 14 years.

He is survived by his wife Peggy DeWall Warnock of Independence, his brothers; Charles (Ann) of PA , Kenneth (Catherine) of NY, Walter of NC and a sister Candida Mackell (Joseph) of Ohio, sister-in-law Karen DeWall Garrilono (Richard) of CO and a brother-in-law William DeWall (Rose) of Maryland, 11 nieces and nephews and 10 great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, November 6, 2020 at Mount Hope Cemetery at 3:30 pm. Prior to the graveside services friends are invited to sign the register at Webb and Rodrick Chapel from 1:00 to 3:00pm. The family suggests memorials be made payable to the donor’s favorite Veterans Association. Masks and Social Distancing is required.
