Larry Maskus

February 7, 1935 — December 1, 2018

Larry E. Maskus, 83, Independence, Kansas passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory with burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. Friends may register on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the chapel with the family receiving visitors from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital and may be left with the chapel.
Larry E. Maskus was born February 7, 1935 in Dodge City, Kansas to Edward F. and Elsie E. (Eichman) Maskus. Larry attended and graduated from Dodge City High School in 1953 then he attended Emporia State University. In 1956 Larry joined the United States Airforce serving from 1956-1960. Larry returned home to continue his education and attended Southwestern College, Dodge City Community College, Pittsburg State University, Kansas State University, Western State College, as well as other colleges and universities. Larry received his bachelor's Degree in Education in 1961 and his Master's in Business Education in 1968.
As a youth Larry was active in sports, particularly baseball and football, playing on two undefeated high school football teams at Dodge City, he also played Ban Johnson baseball and college football, as well; as played college baseball at Emporia State University.
Larry Coached for several years in the Independence Recreation Commission Summer Baseball Programs, Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion. Larry was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan.
Following Larry's education, he taught business education classes at Moline High School from 1961-1965, Kinsley High School 1965-1968 and Independence Kansas High School from 1968-1993. Larry also served in various other capacities at these schools, including Activities and Athletic Director at Independence High School from 1968-1976.
Larry was a member of Kansas Business Education Association; Kansas National Education Association; Delta Pi Epsilon; and a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Independence, Kansas.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and son in law Mark O. Taylor. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 34 years Linda of the home, four children, Bryan E. (Jane) Maskus, Shawnee, Kansas; Rhonda J. (Mike) Tonker, Duck, West Virginia; Christopher C. Nelson, Independence, Kansas; Denise R. Taylor, Independence, Kansas; four grandchildren, Benjamin P. Maskus; Brianne M. Maskus, Courtney K. Taylor; Dylan O. Taylor; one brother W. Fred (Deloris) Maskus; and one sister Nancy K. (Duane) Bogner, Payola, Kansas.
