Laverne H. Harris, 90, Independence, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Montgomery Place in Independence, Kansas. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 9, 2015 at Gault Hall Chapel in The First United Methodist Church in Independence with Reverend Melanie Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The First United Methodist Church or AWOL and may be left with the chapel. Friends may register on Sunday March 8, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., at Webb and Rodrick Chapel and Crematory.
Laverne Huntington Harris was born on March 24, 1924 in Independence, Kansas the son of John I. and Ina (Nichols) Harris. He attended and graduated from Independence, Kansas schools and Independence Community College and was employed by Heartland Cement Company as a Chemist until his retirement. Laverne was a lifelong member of The First United Methodist Church, a member of the Lion's Club and the I.C.C. Booster's Club.
Laverne was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dellbert Harris, Wayne Harris, and three sisters, Mildred Harris, Maureen Harris, and Blanch Potter. Survivors include his two nieces Peggy Holton, Fort Gibson, OK; Patsy Webb, Denver, CO; nephew Winn Harris, Dallas, TX; and adopted family Becky DePue, Independence, KS; and Shayla Littau, Wichita, KS; and his beloved dog Katy. Arrangements by Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory.
