Leonard E. Barton, Jr. went to be with his Maker December 6, 2014. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, December 12th, 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Pastor Melanie Adams will be presiding over the service. Visitation will be Thursday at the church from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials to Carson Lodge 132 Elk City or the First United Methodist Church and may be left with Webb and Rodrick Chapel who have been entrusted with the services.
Leonard was born November 13, 1920 to Leonard E. Barton and Jennie E. Leslie Barton in Jefferson, KS. He attended Hillsdale and Lone Elm Schools in Chautauqua County. On September 17, 1941 he married Rosa Nell Beck. They resided in Chautauqua County where he farmed. In 1954 they moved to Independence to begin their hardwood lumber business. They operated the lumber mill for 46 years sending Kansas products all over the world. He retired from the mill in September, 2000.
Leonard was a member of the Carson Lodge 132 of Elk City for 38 years and was a 3 time past Master of the Lodge. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and had served as an usher. Leonard was a devoted husband and father. With his wife, Rosa, by his side, they worked together as a team in all of their endeavors. They were blessed to share a loving and caring marriage for 63 years. Leonard was known for his garden and people always admired the way he cared for it. He sold and shared his produce with his family and friends. He also enjoyed hanging gourds around the garden for the purple martins. He delighted in going to his grandchildrens sporting events to cheer them on. He also loved telling jokes to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard his mother, Jennie his wife, Rosa Barton two brothers, Thomas and Allen Barton and one sister, Leonore Earhart. Leonard is survived by one daughter, Laura Keller her husband, Kent grandson, Cole and granddaughter, Alex, of Independence one son, Leonard Barton III grandson Leonard IV and granddaughter, Anne.
