Lyman Burch Newton, 89, of Elk City, Kansas passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014 at Montgomery Place in Independence.
Lyman Burch Newton was born June 11, 1924, in rural Elk City, Kansas, the son of Luman Birch Newton and Elizabeth Pearl Buchanan Newton. He was the seventh child of nine children: Homer, Forrest, Mary, John, Dorothy, Dale, Lyman, Jean, and Roger. He attended several rural elementary schools. His father passed away soon after he started to High School. His formal education ended as he went to work to help his mother. On August 1, 1943 he married Juanita Rachel McCarty at Joplin, Missouri to this union, three sons were born: David, Dennis and Darrell. Darrell was killed in a vehicle accident January 24, 2007 at the age of 56. On October 1, 1943, he was drafted into the Army and served 30 months. Twentyfour months in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged on March 13, 1946. Lyman worked many odd jobs, farmed and raised cattle to make a living for his family. He worked at the Reed Widick Feed Store, Layton Oil Company, and helped build the new highway 160 when the Elk City Lake was built. He was too busy making a living for his family to have many pastimes. But he liked to hang out with his buddies and play with his three sons. He liked to referee the wrestling matches they had on the living room floor. He was very family oriented and never missed a family gathering. He liked to fish, but did not care to eat them. He also liked to tell jokes and play tricks on his friends. Lyman was member of the Community Christian Church, a past member of the Grange, an honorary member of the Elk City High School FFA, a 65 year member of the Farm Bureau and a Lifetime member of VFW Post 1186. Lyman was a kind hearted man who always wanted to be there to help someone. Everyone knew Lyman Newton and he will be missed. He is survived by his wife, Juanita of Elk City two sons, David Newton and wife Sonia of Elk City Dennis Newton and wife Patricia of Elk City daughterinlaw Brenda Newton of Sugarland, TX one brother, Roger Newton and wife Helen of Sonoita, AZ nine grandchildren, Julie Lay of Elk City Brian Newton and wife Kim of Independence Darren Newton and wife Michelle of Elk City Lyman Newton of Houston Michael Newton and wife Rhonda of Cherryvale, Ks Leanna Wiggins and husband Bill of Andover, Ks Jeremy Newton and wife Casey of Missouri City, TX Ryan Newton and wife Julia of Sugarland, TX Amy Clubine and husband Jason of Independence and 16 greatgrandchildren, Mersadies Newton , Courtney Lay, Krista Newton, Nicholas Newton, Emily Newton, Katherine Wiggins, Kolby Lay, Jaycee Newton, Colton Wiggins, Tyler Cottrell, Sydnee Clubine, Kelly Newton, Adyson Clubine, Owynn Clubine, Elliot Newton, and Piper Newton.
