Marlene Kay Sheets, 67, of Independence, lost her battle with cancer November 25, 2017 at her home. Twenty years ago Marlene had won her fight against cancer; hoping to never have to fight that horrible disease again.
Visitation will be held at Webb & Rodrick Chapel in Independence November 30th 9am-8pm with family members present from 6pm-8pm.
Funeral service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on December 1st, at 11am with Bishop Jeffery Hogge officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, OK at 3pm.
Marlene was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Millard Owen and Alta Bonnelle Lumley on August 13th, 1950. She attended Edison High School and graduated in 1968. She went on to earn her BA in education and Minor in instrumental music from Oklahoma State University in 1972. She was active in her sorority Alpha Chi Omega, Gamma Epsilon Chapter. Marlene continued her education at Northeastern State achieving her Masters.
Marlene taught in Oklahoma for 5 years beginning in 1972 before moving to Caney. She taught in Caney, Kansas for 38 years. While in Caney she taught 6th grade, 1st grade, and was the Elementary counselor for 20 years; before retiring in 2015. Marlene enjoyed and cherished her time as a teacher and counselor. She was a member of the local Beta Sigma Phi chapter and a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. She was an active member of the Independence LDS Ward and serviced as their pianist. She enjoyed playing and teaching piano, raising and showing bulldogs, reading, gardening, traveling, and enjoying time with her family especially her twin grandbabies. Marlene also enjoyed running their produce stand with Ron during the summer. Marlene was working on a children's book over the years as well.
Marlene is preceded in death by her parents Millard Owen and Alta Bonnelle Lumley; Step-mother Irene Lumley.
Marlene is survived by her husband Ron Sheets; daughter Amanda (Aaron) Godsey; step-daughter Michelle (Harry) Gifford; step-son John Sheets; step-Son Steve Sheets; six grandchildren Ryan (Tera Titus) Gifford, Kendra Gifford, Kayla Sheets, Rachelle (Ryan) Polk, Preston Godsey, and Sawyer Godsey; sister Janelle (Ray) Babb, Brother Roger (Suzanne) Lumley, sister-in-law LaDonna (Ted) Robson, sister-in-law Anita (Fred) Rucker; six nieces and nephews; seven great-nieces and great-nephews, and one great-great-nephew; two bulldogs; Sarge and Champ
Memorial donations can be made to AWOL Animal Shelter in Independence and may be left with the chapel.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice for their support over the last three months.
