Opal Grace (Hazzard) Burnett, 96, Independence, Kansas passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Medicalodge of Coffeyville. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. A graveside inurnment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2024, at Yates Center Cemetery. Opal was born April 29, 1928, in Iola, Kansas to Marshall L. Hazzard and Leotis Laurene (Swope) Hazzard. She attended schools in Yates Center, Kansas, Ventura, California, Hutchinson, Kansas and graduated from Yates Center High School in 1947. She was married and divorced from Howard Burnett. She moved to Sycamore, Kansas, and worked for Automated Controls as a press operator. After her retirement in 1991 she worked for Dart Oil Company until 2004. She enjoyed fishing, dancing, and quilting. She was a member of Sycamore Ladies Aid and Sycamore Valley Ladies Aid. She was preceded in death by both parents and her companion Vincent T. Sandbothe. Three cousins survive her: Velda (Swope) Tilgner, Vera (Swope) Hunziker, and Glen Charles Swope, three Swope cousins and families and five Sandbothe children and families.
