Richard D. Brooks rest his eyes eternally on January 1, 2018 at the age of 79. Cremation has taken place and a family only Celebration of Richard's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may register from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. Memorials in honor of Richard may be made to Harry Hynes Hospice and may be left with the chapel.
Richard was born November 13, 1938 in Lawrence, Kansas to George L. and Helen C. (Hunn) Brooks. At the age of 16, Richard moved to Coffeyville, Kansas with his family and graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1957. Richard married Sandra Tucker in 1957 sharing a marriage for 60 years. The couple built a very successful janitorial service which they ran for 40 years.
Richard was very active in youth sports, specifically softball and basketball. He not only sponsored many teams but also coached and managed some along the way. He enjoyed teaching young people all about good sportsmanship. Richard was very respected and admired in his coaching. When he wasn't coaching his sports teams he enjoyed buying, selling, and trading antique cars and car parts at local swap meets.
Richard enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He most always had one or more with him. Richard will always be remembered as a man who could strike up a conversation with anyone. He is known to have never met a stranger. Richard will be deeply missed by all of his family.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Sandra Brooks, of the home; four children, Russell Brooks, Shelly and husband Richard Schlotman, Kim and husband Ronald Wood, and Rollie Brooks; eleven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
