Stephen Leonard

December 12, 1955 — March 20, 2020

Stephen Robert Leonard, 64, passed away March 20, 2020. He was born in Independence, Kansas on December 12, 1955 to William Robert and Carol Jane Leonard. He spent his childhood years in Independence graduating from Independence High School in 1974. He attended the University of Kansas, was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and an avid Jayhawk fan. Steve began his professional career in Dallas, Texas where he founded Assured Restoration Inc. followed by founding North American Restoration and Consulting. He was recognized as an industry expert and leader in fire, water and catastrophe restoration. Steve was affectionately known as “Lenny” and he was a true and loyal friend to many. He was loved for his quick wit. He was a motorcycle and car enthusiast. He enjoyed many trips to Sturgis, South Dakota on his Harley Davidson. Later in life Steve returned to the Independence area and enjoyed raising horses as part of K & L Horse Farm with his partner, Kim. If he wasn’t tending to the horses and farm grounds you could find him taking care of his mom‘s home and yard. Steve’s compassionate heart never allowed him to turn away a stray dog or animal. Steve’s caring and giving character was demonstrated by his many acts of kindness and by being ever-ready to lend a helping hand while never seeking personal recognition. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his children and grandchildren, whether it was enjoying time at Riverside Park or having the ponies saddled and ready for a ride.

Steve will be dearly missed by all. He was preceded in death by his father William Robert Leonard and is survived by his partner, Kim Stevenson, Coffeyville, KS.
