Velma Lucille Hopper, 103, Wichita, Kansas formerly of Independence, Kansas passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Kansas Masonic Home in Wichita, Kansas. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2017 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or American Cancer Society and may be left with the chapel.
Velma was born February 9, 1914 in Seiling, Oklahoma to Orval Russell and Mary Jane (DeWitt) Jarvis. Velma graduated from Lafontaine High School and then attended Pittsburg State University. Velma married Thornton T. Hopper on July 25, 1937 in Neodesha, Kansas the couple moved around some before making their home in Independence, Kansas. They owned the Sherwood Motel for 10 years. Velma was a longtime member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Kenneth Jarvis; two sisters, Vina Surber and Vera Bailey. Survivors include two daughters, Janice (Dean) Becannon, Chanute, KS, Sonja (John J.) Gillock, Wichita, KS; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
