Verlin Floyd "Ozzie" Osburn, 94, Independence, Kansas passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Montgomery Place in Independence. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Webb & Rodrick Chapel with Reverend Gerald Eytchinson of the Epiphany Church officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Fort Riley and V.F.W. Post 1186. The casket has been closed and friends may register on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 from 8:00 am -5:00 pm at the chapel. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Ozzie Osburn Memorial to support the ICC Football Program and may be left with the chapel or mailed to ICC Foundation at P.O. Box 218 Independence, KS 67301.
Ozzie was born July 21, 1920 in Independence, Kansas to William Floyd and Mearl Melvina (Coy) Osburn. He attended and graduated from Independence schools. Following graduation he joined the United States Army, following his honorable discharge he attended Bevins Business College and Okmulgee Technical School . Ozzie was employed by Sinclair/ Arco Pipeline as a Communication Engineer for 26 years until retirement 1975.
On August 10, 1942 he married Elizabeth ( Betty) Louise Jones in Independence, Kansas, she preceded him in death on November 11, 1981. He later married Irma Klintworth - Hight on July 16, 1988 and she preceded him in death on January 19, 1991. Ozzie is one of the founding members of the Osage Bowmen Archery Club from 1959 - 1967, a member of the V.F.W. Post 1186, member of the ICC Booster Club and Duck's Unlimited along with being an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed his time camping in Cripple Creek and Steam Boat Springs Colorado. Ozzie was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother: Robert Herman Osburn, and one daughter Linda Whitman.
Survivors include; one son: Floyd A. and wife Barbara Osburn, Wichita, KS; four grandchildren: Debbie and husband C.J. Romig, Inverness, IL; Tisha Duncan, Hooker, OK; Brett Osburn, Wichita, KS and Ryan Osburn, Overland Park, KS; five great-grandchildren: David Bryant, Independence, KS; Taylor Romig, Lawrence, KS; Ashley Duncan, Guymon, OK; Chase Duncan, Hooker, OK; Payten Romig, Inverness, IL; and one great- great -granddaughter Zoe Duncan.
