William Norman Castagna, 93, long time resident of Independence, KS, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at Medicalodges, Independence, KS
A Rosary will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2017, followed by a family visitation from 6:00-7:00 p.m. both at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Independence, KS. Holy Mass for the Repose of His Soul will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2017, also at St. Andrew's with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, KS.
Norman was born in Huntsville, MO, on September 29, 1923, to Catterina and James Castagna, one of five children. Before he was seven, he traveled to and from Italy, living there for a year, returning through Ellis Island, NY.
Norman served his country for three years in the U.S. Army during World War II receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Missouri, where he tutored athletes, was a graduate instructor and caddied at the local golf course. Norman met his bride to be, Margaret (Marge) A. Wellman, on a blind date, and they were married on June 24, 1967.
Norman worked at Union Gas System from 1969-1987 as Vice President, Treasurer and Director. He went on to work at Crescent Oil for the next 30 years. Norman loved Independence, KS, and served with many organizations. He was President of the Rotary Club, the Independence Chamber of Commerce, FORPAZ, Sekan Council Boy Scouts of America, Independence Country Club, Independence Toastmasters Club, Kansas LP Gas Association, Independence Community Chest, and was Chairman of the Salvation Army.
He was on the Board of Trustees of the Independence Elks, Knights of Columbus, Independence Country Club, Independence Chapter of the American Red Cross, Chairman, Trustee and member of the Board of Directors of Independence Community College, the Quivira Boy Scouts Council and was awarded a Silver Beaver from the Boy Scouts of America in 1972. Norman also received The Spirit Guardian Award from Independence Chamber of Commerce in 2006. He served on the State Chamber of Commerce, finance committee at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Mercy Hospital Foundation and #446 School Foundation. He was currently on the Independence Community College Foundation Board.
Norman leaves a Christian legacy of kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marge, of 50 years, son Jeff Washburn, wife Susan, sons Matthew, Michael and William, of Wichita, KS, and daughter Janet Roush, husband Eldon and daughter Emma, of Overland Park, KS, and nieces and nephews. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Mary Bagby & Margaret Castagna and brothers Pete Castagna & James Castagna, Jr.
The family suggests memorials, in lieu of flowers, to St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Quivira Boy Scouts of America or FORPAZ (Friends of the Independence, KS Park). Memorials may be mailed to Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home, 306 W. Main St., Independence, KS 67301, or left at St. Andrew's Catholic Church.
